Understanding Your Paycheck

Federal Income Tax

Federal income tax is calculated using progressive tax brackets. The more you earn, the higher percentage you pay on income above each threshold.

2026 Tax Brackets (Single):

  • 10% on income up to $11,600
  • 12% on $11,601 - $47,150
  • 22% on $47,151 - $100,525
  • 24% on $100,526 - $191,950
  • 32% on $191,951 - $243,725
  • 35% on $243,726 - $609,350
  • 37% on income over $609,350

FICA Taxes (Social Security & Medicare)

Social Security: 6.2% of gross pay up to $168,600 (2026 wage base limit)

Medicare: 1.45% of all gross pay (no limit)

Additional Medicare: 0.9% on wages over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married)

Your employer matches these amounts - they pay 6.2% + 1.45% on your behalf!

Ways to Reduce Taxable Income

  • 401(k) contributions: Up to $23,000/year (2026)
  • Traditional IRA: Up to $7,000/year
  • HSA contributions: Up to $4,150 single / $8,300 family
  • FSA contributions: Up to $3,200/year
  • Commuter benefits: Up to $315/month

Pre-tax deductions lower your taxable income, saving you money!
